“If you expect the whole world to behave nicely and think that then you'll be able to meditate, forget it!
You'll have to accept the external situation around you as it is.
Accept the external world as it is.”
Swami Rama, The Art of Joyful Living (page 164 in the 1989 edition)

Founders of religions did not come in the world to create conflicts. They came to create harmony. They came to unite the different parts. Jesus Christ did not come to create conflict. The Buddha did not come to create conflict. The founder of yoga did not come to create conflict. These founders had giant consciousness, vast consciousness. Consciousness of the whole universe and beyond are their consciousness. Everything that happens in that universe is part of their understanding. Therefore, all the paths are their paths. They taught us how to combine the paths. They knew what the previous buddhas, prophets, masters, ṛṣis had taught. They did not contradict that teaching.

3 Prime Conditionings

by Swami Rama

[This is an excerpt from The Art of Joyful Living by Swami Rama. Chapter “Knowing Your Own True Self,” Pages 1 – 2 in the 1989 edition.]

You all want to know that reality or truth which is eternal; you want to experience that state of peace and equilibrium that is your essential nature. And yet the mind and personality prevent you from experiencing that finest level of yourself – the Center of Consciousness within. In the ancient teachings it is said that time, space, and causation are the three primary conditionings or filters that affect the mind; however, you can lead your mind beyond these conditions.
Time is the most powerful of all the “filters” that condition the mind. It is a powerful filter of reality. For example, perhaps you are very sad today, but even then, a time comes during the day when you laugh. Or perhaps today you have been laughing and feeling good; still a time will come when you will feel sad. Thus, time affects your mind. Every state of mind is transitory and limited by time.

Anniversary Celebration in Pune

By Dr. Shirin Venkat

Swami Rama Yoga and Meditation Center Pune, India

29 March 2021

Jai Gurudev!

Celebrating our anniversary of the pranayama and meditation classes through lockdown today. It is also Holi today and Rang Panchami follows. The festival of Holi is ever so inspiring. It reminds us of the victory of divine qualities over demoniacal ones. It ushers in a new year and heralds the summer season with its myriad colours. It is the festival of colour and a dance of joy. The Grace of the Guru permeates every pore, and we feel profound gratitude.

To have sincerely completed one full year of pranayama and meditation classes, five days a week all through the lockdown and this challenging year, can only be His Grace. We feel blessed to have been so inspired.

The entire effort began with Dr. Leela George asking for such classes online, and from then on, we had Dr. Neela Desai and Dr. Rashmi Madan joining soon after. Dr. Venkat, of course, has been there from day one. Later a whole big jing bang of jolly souls like Pratibha and Harish Durgeshwari and Balachander, Vinita Mohoni and Rama, Raag Agarwal, Yogesh and Nathan also joined. Some participants were regularly regular and others regularly irregular and still others irregularly irregular. All in the fitness of things.

Swami Rama believed that he was sent to this world to teach about love. (Love Whispers, page 39). His life was a demonstration of selfless service and love for all. Love, he said, is the living force of the universe.  Nothing can survive without love; therefore, Life is Love. (Love Whispers, page 28). This mystery is unveiled only to those who truly learn to love others and make love the goal of life. (The Ancient Traveler, page 85)

The Noose of Time

by Shirin Venkat

31 March 2021

Time is a noose
When young apparently tight
And actually quite loose
Many things to do
And deadlines to meet.
There is enough time
One is often told
To do all you want
But right now do what you have to do.

HYT-TTP Virtual Workshop

by HYT-TTP Administration Team

After a month long of beautiful inspirations and sharing, the live sessions of the HYT-TTP 40-hour virtual workshop came to an end on April 17th.  We wish to give our heartfelt gratitude to all presenters and participants for making this event a success beyond all our expectation.

The event gathered an amazing 335 participants from 47 countries from around the globe.  Despite the continuing pandemic that prevents us from meeting each other in person, it was such a blessing to be able to gather together virtually and meet our extended AHYMSIN family during this wonderful event that gave a chance to everyone to deepen their studies and practices with the help of the amazing insights shared by the faculty.  We could really feel that we were welcoming everyone into our home and that we were being welcomed in everyone’s home.

Even though the live sessions are now completed, it is still possible to access the video recordings of every session as well as the resources shared by the faculty by registering and making a donation towards the sustenance of Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) during the pandemic through the HYT-TTP website himalayanyogatradition.com

Dear Yoga Mentor, My Question Is…

Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda Bharati, Swami Ritavan Bharati, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice. This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.

Question:

I am reaching out in regard to the Hatha sequencing and warm-up stretching I did daily while at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG). I really enjoyed the teaching and how the lessons were put together. While I do recall some of the general postures, I was wondering if someone might be able to share names of asanas that the lessons were structured around, so I can look into them in more depth, please? Any background on the yoga classes, postures, and sequencing would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

Swami Ritavan Bharati and Carolyn Hume have answered this question.
