The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

by Randall Krause (Mokshadeva)

Online study groups of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali starting.

It was more than 30 years ago. I was searching for a spiritual teacher and heard that a great yoga teacher would be teaching in the San Francisco area. His name was Usharbudh Arya. He was going to be teaching “The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali” at a person’s home.

I called the organizer of the event and told her that I’d like to meet Dr. Arya. She invited me to drop in to the seminar to meet him. So, on appointed day, I drove out to Point Richmond, past the big oil refinery there, and found my way to the nice house where the seminar was happening. There were many shoes resting outside of the front door.

Entering the house, it was clear that I had arrived during a break in the action. People were milling about and a respectable looking Indian man, clothed in white, was sitting very upright in meditation position, with eyes closed, in meditation, on a low table. I decided he was Dr. Arya. Then I found the organizer who I’d spoken to and she advised me to find a seat and to listen to the talk.

Soon people took their seats, and Dr. Arya opened his eyes and began leading the assembled people through a brief guided meditation. Afterwards, he began his talk on the Yoga Sutras. I still remember, all these years later, that he was discussing the word dharma; that each object has dharmas, different ways in which that object can appear.

It was a surprise to me that I could understand this high refined philosophy. It made complete sense to me. Only later did I come to know that Dr. Arya was a great expert on the Yoga Sutras.

About a year later, I was initiated by Dr. Arya (later known as Swami Veda Bharati) into the Himalayan Yoga Tradition and have been under his guidance ever since. As a student of such a great scholar of the Yoga Sutras, I came to feel over time that it was my duty to learn as much as I could and share with others.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali contain much of the core philosophy and practices of yoga, and understanding them is essential for yoga teachers. Perhaps five years ago, with the permission of Swami Ritavan Bharati, I led two online groups in the Yoga Sutras for a couple of years. Now I’m starting two more groups: one for the Western hemisphere—which just got started— and one for the Eastern hemisphere—which is waiting for more participants. There is room for more participants in both groups.

If you’d like to be part of one of the groups, kindly contact me and I’d be happy to share the details with you. You can reach me at randallcoach@gmail.com.

Namaste, Randall Krause
