Swami Veda begins with a review of the “four basic urges”, the “six negative emotions”, and problems that can arise from them. The mind field can become warped, the free flow of energy blocked, and all this can be reflected in our body language, our speech patterns, and the choices we make. When blockages persist, they lead to the development of unhelpful habit patterns.

The answer to overcoming these blockages lies in the refinement of our emotions. This involves making choices with “sublime” ends in mind, choices consistent with the divine ideal that each of us, in our own way, aspires to. One of the best ways of doing this is by cultivating the virtue of selfless action.
He discusses a variety of other practical steps we can take. For example, in yoga traditions, “sloth” is considered the greatest obstacle to personal growth. One of the keys to overcoming sloth is constant mindfulness of our thoughts, speech, and actions. He gives other advice such as: “give up hurry”, “exercise restraint in all pleasures”, “savor your mantra”, and “don’t separate meditation from life”
