“Our Tradition reminds us through our practice of Yoga that all unfulfilled desires, fears and tendencies held tightly in our undisciplined, distracted mind become our mind's unconscious habits. As we become aware of them we learn to let-go, exhale, and release these habits of ‘graha’ - holding, and thereby give momentum to a new habit of ‘pranidhana’ - resting in awareness, of our own divine nature of wholeness, unity, and joy. This is the full-blossoming of ahimsa. Our life becomes a dance of devotion. And for this reason our Tradition reminds us of our purpose of life in these three: aparigraha, ishwar-pranidhana and ahimsa.” – Swami Ritavan Bharati

A Song of Compassion

by Swami Veda Bharati

[This passage has been taken from the unpublished works of Swami Veda Bharati].

At one time I was doing field work collecting Bhojpuri loka-geeta (folksongs) from five countries of Bhojpuri-speaking diaspora (Guyana, Surinam, Trinidad, Fiji, Mauritius). My collection from one of these countries (Surinam in South America) is in the archives of Leiden University in the Netherlands. The other recordings are still in my possession, looking for an archival home.

The contents of one of the songs I recorded often comes to my mind whenever I see or think of non-humans being killed. Here is a paraphrase of the song.

Do Not Lie

by Swami Rama

(This is an excerpt from Conscious Living: A Guidebook for Spiritual Transformation by Swami Rama, Lotus Press, pages 106- 108.)

Be nice, be kind, be gentle, be loving. What is new about what you are studying, tell me? Have you read anything new anywhere? You have learned ten words for one word, is that improvement in your knowledge? Then what is that knowledge which we are trying to explore and understand today? My whole life, my mother, my father, grandfather, my teachers, everyone says, “Speak the truth,” and I do not know how to. That’s a very serious problem. I would like to speak the truth, everyone wants to speak the truth but nobody teaches you how. You see at home, children are spanked by their parents when the children lie. But after ten minutes, the child finds that Mommy is lying to Daddy, and Daddy is lying to Mommy. The child is confused, “Is it a rule for me not to lie?”

2019 Sangha Gathering and Preparations

by Swami Ritavan Bharati

When we look to the future, we see the opportunities for change, for growth, for embracing a loving heart and a smiling mind. During these 40 days of spiritual peace, we deepen our commitment and accept our practices as discovery - a tapas of peace. We deepen our relationship with the source of inner light and knowledge through remembering our spiritual heritage, our guides, our inspirations of the past reborn in this deep innate desire for freedom, self-understanding and joy.

As the 40 days lead us to Guru Purnima, and to our upcoming Sangha gathering, we reflect, review, and preview these themes of living a spiritually fulfilling life.

Children’s Yoga Camp Gurgaon, 2018

by Sucheta Sabharwal and Anjali Misra

It was an exciting journey to conceptualise and launch the first ever Children’s Yoga Camp in Gurgaon. The purpose of the camp was to introduce our children to the ancient art and science of Yoga in a fun filled way.  Through various exercises and activities, our endeavour was to facilitate the children in connecting with themselves while inculcating a sense of mindfulness in them.

We began the 5 day camp with 13 children by invoking the blessings of Swami Rama. After the Guru puja on the first day, the children started the camp playing ice breaker games and making new friends. As part of their regular classes over the next 5 days, they were introduced to basic postures and the practice of breath awareness.

Three workshops in a day have been conducted by Rabindra Sahu from Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) on 15th May at Mihara town hall, Tokorozawa Saitama, Japan. It was sponsored by AYUR SPACE HIBIKI where I teach classes.

The morning class was on “asana” and 21 people participated. The afternoon class was on “meditation” where we had 27 participants. In the morning class, they learned about Asana, how to work with the body, and the importance of breath awareness. In the afternoon, they learned proper sitting, proper breathing, and introduction to meditation.

A Small Offering

by Shauna Tuttle

[Editor’s note: Shauna wrote this poem to Swami Veda (4 June 2018), writing, “I am missing your outline in my outward landscape…May my words be a small offering to your loving presence in my life. With loving gratitude always and a few tears too.”]

We can trust our knowing nature.
Letting go happens so naturally, when we have faith in our lived experience, an aligning, knowing from both still and stirred spaces.
Here I don’t need to worry about what motivates your outline or its shifting landscapes.
My lens looks inside for our connection to blossom.
We have walked the shoreline multitudes of times throughout our history. Faith is a landscape that breathes and shifts, growing our capacities with more and more ease as we swim.

Retreat and Workshops in Japan

by Yuko Metsugi

~“Let the Practice Be Our Guide”~

We were blessed to have concluded a Yoga retreat successfully inviting Swami Ritavan Bharati, Swami Ma Radha Bharati and Rabindra Sahu from SRSG in May.  The 3-day retreat organized by Himalayan Yoga Meditation Society of Tokyo was held in the countryside where beautiful nature was around. The theme of the retreat was “Peace of Mind, Love of Heart Yoga”. Out of 30 participants, some of them traveled for hours to join the retreat.

On the first day, Swami Ritavan gave us an introductory lecture on Himalayan Yoga Tradition. He also gave us a lecture on peace and guided meditation each day. What he taught us was that it is our inner peace which would become a foundation to spread peace around, and how we could go back to our inner stillness with the help of the practice of yoga.

Dear Yoga Mentor, My Question Is…

Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda Bharati, Swami Ritavan Bharati, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice.  This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.

Today I finished reading Living with the Himalayan Masters. For me, it was like reading a number of fairy-tales, though I don't deny the possibility of such "miracles" to happen.

My questions are:

  1. Do these powers still exist in your tradition? Or are they things from the past?
  2. In your tradition, are there practices that can be thought for attaining such abilities? If yes, will I have access to this advanced science?
  3. As for the power of healing in particular, is there someone in your tradition who can heal chronic illnesses? I am asking this because I do have a chronic disease that is incurable by current medicine. Is there anyone that I can go to for healing, or any practice that I can do to heal myself?

Two have answered this question: Pandit Hari Shankar Dabral and Stephen Parker (Stoma).
