Psychology of Silence

by Swami Veda Bharati

[From the book Silence, the Illuminated Mind by Swami Veda Bharati, published by Himalayan Yoga Publications Trust 2018].

When we contemplate silence and begin to talk about it, would we find ourselves at a loss for words? We want to reach the point of silence where words would be fully lost and the silence of mind that ensues alone would be our communication.

The Method for Inner Study

by Swami Rama

[From the book Choosing a Path,pp 13 – 17, by Swami Rama, published 1982 by the Himalayan International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy of the USA].

Human beings are always disappointed in the external world, yet they have not turned inward to understand anything about the internal world. Those who begin to search the other dimensions of life come in contact with subtleties that are puzzling to them, and they do not know what to do next.

Sangha Talk

by Swami Ritavan Bharati

(This is an excerpt from a transcript of the Sangha Talk February 1, 2018, by Swami Ritavan Bharati at The Meditation Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota USA.)

Good evening and welcome on a cold evening. I’m sure you’ve brought your warm hearts and together such warmness will be enlightening. Welcome to those who have come from a distance – all the way from Chicago – as well as all of you, having ventured out on this cold evening to be another ember on this fire of illumination, the beauty of such a conflagration of consciousness that each and every one embraces as their own identity.

I am reminded of Swami Veda’s beautiful meditation on this relationship of a stream of awareness, an illumination of consciousness as the very Being – and each of us as that Presence imbued with the life-force from our Divine Mother who has enwombed us in her grace.

Deepening Your Sadhana

by Pandit Hari Shankar Dabral

The Meditation Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota – USA. January 25, 2018

Let’s pay homage to the Guru Lineage. Let’s connect with their minds. Take the awareness through the presence of the Guru by the Guru Mantra, your personal mantra, your personal mantra reciting in your mind for a moment. Then join me for Guru Shanti and then we’ll begin:

gurur brahmā gurur viṣhṇur gurur devo maheśhvaraḥ
guruḥ sākṣhāt param brahmā tasmai śhrī-gurave namaḥ
Om! Śhāntiḥ! Śhāntiḥ! Śhāntiḥ!

Thank you! Namaste!

First of all I would like to thank Rajnikant who initiated this thought that I should do a Skype session. At the beginning I resisted it. Somehow I said “no” in my mind, but to him I always say “yes,” and I like this idea. It’s a great way to connect, and I would be happy to do more and more satsang this way – whatever you guys need. Whenever there is a need for me to speak, please me know. And I am so grateful and thankful to Rajnikant, and so “Thank you, Rajnikant!”

It’s always good to be with the Center and with all those who are here. This evening what I would like to share with you is what I was told when I asked a certain question to Swami Veda and also Swami Rama of the Himalayas. The question was: “How can we deepen our own practice, which is known as sadhana?”

Ten Days Silence in SRSG

by Shunyaa Tsai

Thanks for the great teaching of the Himalayas masters.

Silence does not just shut up, but is more about the peace within you.

This ten days silence retreat for me was a prayer of my 2018.

The most powerful experiences of this retreat are walks in our contemplative Garden and every afternoon relaxation guide by SVBji’s recording.

Dear Yoga Mentor, My Question Is…

Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda Bharati, Swami Ritavan Bharati, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice.  This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.

Could you shower your guidance on Asana perfection???

Three have answered this question: Mrs. Lalita Arya (Ammaji), Michael Smith, and Carolyn Hume.

Meditation in Christianity

by Beatrix Dekkers-Heezius

Study week “Meditation in Christianity” 21 November-24 November 2017 at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG).

Some time has passed since this study week was offered, but as the content was timeless I hope that this resume of the talks is of interest to you. I have followed the chronological order of the talks but for sake of clarity I have combined the 3 presentations of Sister Corona.

Understanding of God in Vedanta - Stephan Parker (Stoma), PsyD, E-RYT 500, YACEP, Traveling Teacher

Stomaji began by stating that there is only one reality “Ekam sat”. Although Hinduism is often regarded as polytheistic (many Gods), it is actually polymorphic (many forms of one reality). Advaita says that there is “not two”. He spoke about the 6 different Indian philosophies and pointed out the ideas that are in common with Christianity and Islam. Also Kashmir Shaivism was mentioned where the Sanskrit alphabet is described as a paradigm for the manifestation of the universe. A very similar system exists in Judaism, in Kabbalah, a mystical system of practice dating back to Abraham.

Dance Workshop & Maha Shivaratri

by Carolyn Hume

Maha Shivaratri is observed annually at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) with an all night practice and vigil, including the chanting of the thousand names of Shiva. Sometimes the vigil takes place also at Sadhana Mandir and the Virbhadra Temple.

Jay Prakash Bahuguna took photos of this year’s observations, both the preceding dance workshop and the all night vigil, some of which can be seen in this article, and through them provides a visual record of these days in 2018.

I did not have the privilege of attending the observances this year, but still carry in my mind an all night vigil with Swami Veda Bharati and other sadhakas, which was spiritually charged and permeated with silence. Swamiji chanted the "Nirvana Shatakam" or "Atma Shatakam" by Adi Shankara; this had been heart-held by me even before I physically met Swami Rama and Swami Veda in this lifetime. This is Swami Veda’s translation:

Mano-buddhy-ahankaara-chittaani naaham…

I am not mind, intellect, thought, or ego;
Not hearing, taste, smelling or sight;
Not ether or earth, fire or air,
I am the soul of Knowledge and Bliss –
I am Shiva, I am Shiva.
